A Construction Trade Union is a group of skilled trade professionals in all of the Construction Trades throughout Ohio who come together to negotiate and work for higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions.

Members of Construction Trade Unions also are dedicated to protecting each other's interests.

Ohio's Construction Trade Union members work together to negotiate and enforce contracts with their construction contractors that provide benefits such as:

  • Sufficient and fair RAISES;
  • Secure PREVAILING WAGES;
  • High-quality, affordable FAMILY HEALTH INSURANCE;
  • SAFER workplaces;
  • Job SECURITY; and
  • Stable WORK SCHEDULES.

A Local Union is a locally based group of workers with a charter from a national or international union. Ohio's Construction Trade Local Unions each work like a democracy, holding elections for officers who make decisions on behalf of members, giving workers more power on the job.

Ohio's Construction Workers Have Been Unionized Since the 1800s

Working for well over a Century to secure employment stability and economic security for its skilled craft professionals in the construction industry, Ohio's Construction Trade Unions have achieved a POWERFUL VOICE throughout the state. During that time, Ohio's Construction Trade Union members have also built many of the state's most iconic structures and infrastructure.

Union Members Advance Their Careers

Ohio's Construction Unions make sure their members are trained and prepared to handle greater and more complex responsibilities, allowing them to ADVANCE THEIR CAREERS in a number of ways.

  • Journeyman Upgrade Training permits union construction workers to take on larger projects with advanced skills and knowledge.
  • Foreman and Job Steward classes and training permit union construction workers to take on supervisory roles on job sites and earn higher wages.

Ohio's Union Construction Workers are also part of democratic organizations that are governed from within their own membership; therefore, the they can take on roles as UNION OFFICERS at the local level, including:

  • Business Managers;
  • Financial Secretaries; and
  • Treasurers.

At the STATE AND INTERNATIONAL LEVELS, construction unions are also run and administered by their own members, who are also promoted from within!

  • Current International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) International Secretary-Treasurer Kenneth Cooper is a member of Local No. 688 in Mansfield, Ohio.

Ohio's Construction Unions also prepare its members to become OWNER/OPERATOR CONTRACTORS by providing them with:

  • Business training and classes; and
  • Real-life supervisory and business roles in the construction industry.
